Gaisce – The President’s Award
Gaisce is a challenge set by the President of Ireland. It is non-competitive and gives students an opportunity to develop all aspects of their personalities, skills and abilities.
Gaisce is currently available as part of the Transition Year programme here in Carrigallen Vocational School.
It is divided into the following sections.
There are three levels:
As students start with bronze they must devote an hour of their time to each section for 13 weeks.
1. Personal Skill
In the past, students from our school have learned sign language, first aid and most recently, self defence. This involves 1 hour per week for 13 weeks.
2. Community Involvement
Students must get involved with a group in their community on a voluntary basis. In the past, students from our schools have mentored sports teams, helped out with youth groups and established small homework groups. This involves 1 hour per week for 13 weeks.
3. Physical Recreation
Students must commit to undertaking 1 hour a week for 13 week at a recreational activity. This could be swimming, running, cycling, etc.
Students must plan, prepare and undertake a hike of 25km and an overnight stay at an adventure centre. They are also introduced to basic survival skills, and orienteering. In the past our students have travelled to Achill Island in Co. Mayo, Lough Talt and the Ox Mountains and Castle Saunderson in Belturbet, Co. Cavan.
The President’s Award is a thoroughly enjoyable experience and is a highly recognised award for students to have as part of their Curriculum Vitae in the future.
